Last September, during Paris Fashion Week, I was commissioned by Virgil Abloh and his team to create an illustrated view of "Track and Field", the Spring/Summer 2019 OFF-WHITE collection.
It goes without saying, I was more than excited to have such an opportunity. For that reason, I was invited to sketch live during the fittings of the new collection prior to the show and then also backstage, a few days later.
Being able to attend the fittings allowed me to approach the new collection with more time than usual, as I mostly sketch only during shows and backstage. During the fittings, I was able to have a preview of the new OFF-WHITE collection, its colour palette, its mood, the details of the garments and accessories, that were sometimes edited or created right under my eyes. It was for sure a very precious moment for my work as an illustrator.
While supermodels like Bella Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Kaia Gerber and Kendall Jenner were trying their looks for the show, I could start doing some preliminary sketches.
A couple of days later, it was the day of the show, and I was more than ready to keep sketching backstage, as soon as the models were fully dressed and ready with their make-up and hair done. I started doing some sketches of models' faces already during the rehearsal.
Eventually, I ended up doing the more of my illustrations while models were in line, right before hitting the catwalk. Including beautiful Adut Akech rocking her Stabilo Couture T-Shirt Gown, the very same one that Beyonce will wear a few days later to end her 'On the run II" joint tour with Jay-Z.
It was surely a very adrenaline-pumping moment and, as an illustrator, a unique experience I am quite proud of. You can find some pictures from those days in a gallery below. Also, keep an eye on my Instagram account and Stories Highlights as I will share more pictures and videos from my OFF-WHITE illustrated coverage.
Big thanks to Virgil Abloh for having me, thank you very much also to the whole OFF-WHITE team for kindly welcoming me and to everybody who worked so hard during those days! A very special thanks to the models who were so very patient with me.
