Due to the current health crisis, fashion brands have been challenged to create unique and enticing ways to present their new collections. With London Fashion Week going "phygital", JW Anderson expands the "show in a box" concept first introduced last June to present the men's and pre-collection.
I had the pleasure to sketch backstage several times for JW Anderson, with the physical shows put on hold, it was such a treat to receive the box that presents the new collection.
The Spring/Summer 2021 collection takes the shape of a book bound with the lookbook interspersed with different kinds of paper and pure coloured sheets.
A quote by Oscar Wilde, "The secret of life is in art", opens the book. The same words are engraved on a brass coin, which is the key to unveil the show in a box experience.
Some binders inside include also limited edition c-type prints by photographer Lewis Roland.
JW Anderson invites us to deconstruct the book to create a performative conversation and to experience the new collection in a personal way: "rather than evoking what is not possible, the 'show in a box' creates a new engagement, that is only possible now".
Just like the quote by Oscar Wilde suggests, the Spring/Summer 2021 JW Anderson collection is a celebration of art and fashion at its best. A poetic and powerful collection that keeps exploring that sense of grace and sophistication that has become unique to the brand and its aesthetic.
The 37 looks that compose the new collection are an exquisite expression of contemporary tailoring. JW Anderson keeps investigating new and unexpected silhouettes, preserving a harmonious balance throughout the whole collection.
The box focuses also on the accessories, introducing a new version of some of the best sellers of the brand as the anchor logo bag and the cap bag.
The colour palette is mainly formed by white and black, with hints of beige, yellow, pink and orange.
I am particularly drawn to the giant earrings that complete most of the looks, that suggest that playful attitude which has become a JW Anderson signature.
Thank you very much to JW Anderson: it was a pleasure to discover the new collection in such a personal and intimate way!
