WALES BONNER AW20

Updated: Aug 10, 2021

"Dedicated to each and every one inna di area. A homecoming. Lover’s Rock."

A heartfelt moment, the Autumn/Winter 2020 Wales Bonner show was certainly the gem of London Fashion Week Men's and possibly the one I was most looking forward to.

In a few years, Grace Wales Bonner has been building her own universe, exploring her Jamaican roots and the black male identity, establishing herself as one of the most interesting menswear designers nowadays.

Her AW20 collection draws inspiration from the second generation of Caribbean immigrants to the United Kingdom, in particular, it references "Lover's Rock", a photographic series by John Goto documenting young British African-Caribbeans at Lewisham Youth Centre in London in the 70s.

The fashion designer works along with Adidas on footwear and apparel as well and with Stephen Jones on the hand-knit beanies, crafted in raw Scottish shetland wool.

Jamie XX, with the song "Dancewme", is in charge of the show soundtrack, a tribute to the music originated in that era.

This sketch, created during the show, is part of my London Fashion Week AW20 live illustrated coverage for L'Officiel Hommes Italia.
